Packing glass, wine and fragile Judaica

Glass and ceramics

  • Use the double-box method: wrap the item, place it in a small box with padding on all sides, then place that box in a larger box with at least 5 cm of padding all round.
  • Wrap separate parts separately (a lid, a stand, a tray). Fill hollow spaces like cups and vases with soft paper.
  • Mark the box “Fragile”. The marking helps, but the packing is what protects the item.

Wine and other bottles

  • Use moulded pulp or cardboard bottle shippers made for bottles. Never send a bottle in a padded envelope.
  • Check whether your courier carries alcohol at all, and on which services. Many couriers do not carry alcohol abroad.
  • Alcohol needs an age check at delivery where the law requires it. Alcohol cannot be sold on thekoshershop.com.

Silver and metal Judaica

  • Wrap silver in acid-free tissue and a sealed bag so it does not tarnish, then pad it like glass.
  • For valuable items, use a service with compensation that covers the value, and require a signature.

Candles

  • Candles soften and bend in heat. Pack them tight, avoid hot vans in summer where possible, and include the safety information.

Scrolls, books and ketubot

  • Mezuzah scrolls: in a sealed plastic sleeve, inside a rigid tube or box, never folded or pressed.
  • Prints and ketubot: flat between two stiff boards, or rolled in a strong tube with end caps.
  • Books: in a snug box or a book wrap, with the corners protected.
